Das Vorkommen der Rauchschwalbe hängt sehr stark von der Viehhaltung im ländlichen Gebieten ab: Sie brütet fast ausschließlich im Gebäudeinneren von Ställen.
Die Mehlschwalbe lässt sich leicht durch den nur flach gegabelten Schwanz, die weiße Unterseite und den weißen Bürzel von der Rauchschwalbe unterscheiden.
